Pupdates
Things are busy at Costa's Curly Canines but we do our best to keep the pupdates coming so prospective parents can follow along. Be sure to check us out on Social Media so you don't miss any excitement! Although email is a great way to send and receive necessary documents, it is not the preferred method of communication as we do not routinely check emails unless we are expecting something from one of our families.
16 Weeks
These guys have actually been doing so amazingly well with all of their training skills that we actually backed off a bit on advertising them so we could determine who would best fit our service dog program. The problem is, honestly they all show the qualities needed to succeed and we haven't been able to definitively decide. Going forward we are going to continue to work with them train, and advertise them for sale again. If there isn't any one pup that truly stands out as of now then regardless we know we will have one or two amazing puppies that continue on with us and 3-4 very lucky families that will end up with a fully vaccinated, highly socialized, well-trained puppy as a new member of their family! We are doing so well with our puppy manners, we have found nothing so far that scares us, we are potty trained, sleep through the night, know to sit, down, place, wait, and are working on leave it, and our heel command. We are great with car rides now too! Still love swimming of course and our all-time favorite words are cheesy treats!
Teal Boy
As much as it was hard to say goodbye to our precious Teal, he went to the most amazing home we could ask for! His dad is a veterinarian and him and his wife live in beautiful Saint Augustine where he gets lots of walks, toys, and love a pup could ask for! I know he is going to have the very best life! Look forward to getting updates and watching him grow into the pupfect pup we know he will be!
Precious Black Boy
Black went to go live with a musician and Yoga Instructor where his morning walks with be along the beach in the Florida Sand! His family is wonderful and he will have a nice big bunch or humans to give him all the love he deserves!
Red Boy
Red Boy is going to be spending his days living on a lake in Michigan with his new family. In the meantime, he is here with his new brothers and sisters riding around on 4-wheelers and going swimming as much as he pleases, which is exactly the perfect place for him to be! They all love water but Red is the most at home when he is wet! I will miss my impromptu shower companion but I am so happy for what lies ahead for him!
12 Week Old
This is where things start to get really hard, saying goodbye to them is not easy as we have come to love each and every one of them so much. Keeping them until at least 12 weeks gives them such valuable time to learn from mom and littermates, and for us to ensure they get as much initial socialization as possible in a safe way before going to new homes. That is great for them, and for their new families, but makes it harder for our hearts. We have enjoyed raising them, loving them, and teaching them more than words can say. That being said, we are excited for them and the adventures that await them with their new families! We have enjoyed car rides, swimming, baths, fetch, training, cuddles, and learning that new things are exciting and not scary! New owners beware they think the vacuum is their best friend and will absolutely bounce and chace you around while you clean thinking it is playtime!
These are not sad faces, these are..."we are so tired from playing that we drug this dirty towel inside the door to lay on and watch the rest of you", faces!
Dandy & Rocket Litter
8 weeks old
This is where it gets hard, this is where I question if I am cut out for breeding and raising these dogs to go on to forever homes with new families because we truly do love each and every one of them so very much! Honestly, if we ended up with all of them, that would be perfectly fine with us. They all have such awesome unique personalities that make us fall in love with them more and more each day. As much as we know they will bring endless joy to their new families' lives, we are going to miss them terribly. When you put as much into a litter as we do ours it just isn't possible not to get attached. This is also when I almost wish we sent them home at 8 weeks as most breeders do but with as much as we see them learn and grow from weeks 8-10 being with their littermates, mom, and working through our protocols letting them go now would do them a disadvantage. I hope to see the standard change as we come to learn just how much value comes from letting them get that last bit of immersive development before transitioning. This week has been full of emerging personalities really coming to light as they figure out where they rank in the social hierarchy of their current environment. They are finding their voices more and more, learning to chase objects, retrieve, sit, down, come, and mom is setting firm boundaries about when it's time to play and when it's time to settle down. They have been learning so much from mom up until now but really in the next couple of weeks when mom really gets to start to interact in a more social playful way and teach play boundaries other than what they have learned from their littermates. Until now mom has been more of a caregiver than a playmate. With nursing done and over with, and puppy feeding and cleanup being handled by the humans, mom can focus on enjoying her puppies while teaching them acceptable social skills. Watching them all run around together never gets old! Dandy loves getting them all excited and then leading them on a game of chase where she winds up letting them all climb on top of her just to quickly take back off again and leave them scrambling to catch back up! Tomorrow We go for our vaccines and another round of deworming (puppy poop has been pupfect so far though!) Microchips this week, and finalizing their files and paperwork. We still have a couple of pups available if you are looking to add one of our amazing Goldendoodles to your family!
Dandy & Rocket's Litter
6 Weeks old!
Man time sure does fly when you are having fun, How are these pups already 6 weeks old?! They are pretty much fully potty trained with the exception of an occassional accident due to us not quite getting them all out of the house when the first one or two gets up. In a typical one pup setting I would say they are almost perfectly potty trained however I do not want to set them up for failure with false expectations coming into new homes in the coming weeks. Transitions are still a time when skills that have seemingly been mastered can falter so I will not claim any pup is truly potty trained until they are acclimated to their new homes and routine. That being said when you have 8 6 week old puppies all make it over 2 weeks overnight without a single accident I think you can call that a win! During the day where they are mostly free roam suprivised within the house we have the occasional accident happen but honestly we are so very impressed with how well they are doing. We will start bell training next week too which will hopefully help provide a constant for them when they transition into their new homes. They have transitioned from much to a ground up version of their dry food with some food toppers mixed in to their morning and evening meals. They have learned what treats are and area eager to learn the things that will get them the delicious yum yums they crave! Currently Cheese and Nudges jerky treats are their all time fave! We have had almost daily opportunities lately to play in the rain and do fun stuff as the storms roll in and none of them are at all bothered by them or their thunderous noises! We love to hop around the vacuum cleaner when it comes to clean up their puppy messes and no one seems a bit fazed about the noise that comes with. We are getting more and more confident each day (sometimes overly so lol) taking on new challenges with climbing on and through new things. Although they all have their unique personalities they are all such outgoing confident pups it's hard to single any one out of this litter which makes our decisions so much harder when it comes to who will continue on with our service dog program. At this point I couldn't pick out anyone who I feel would not have to potential to complete the program and continue on to do service dog work. We will see what these next few weeks bring, hopefully we will be able to make a decision easily but I have a feeling they do not plan to make this part of the process easy at all! Not complaining though, there are definitely worse things to be worried about!
5 Weeks Old Spells Dirty Doggos
They are really starting to Love outside playtime, but with that comes lots of baths! This is a snapshot of Big Brother looking over them as they get ready for a cleanup session! This will probably be the last group bath we do since their 5 week old personalities are flourishing and they are figuring out that I only have 2 hands and they have a combined 32 paws that can give me a run for my money! They love water, but being contained in a less than enriching environment for an extended period of time is less than ideal for them and they let me know it. So goodbye to our fun group Splish splash sessions and hello to one on one cleanup and grooming ones!
4 Weeks Feels like Freedom!
Getting their first taste of the big outdoor world! Honestly I was hoping for a bit more excitement for their first taste of the bid outdoors but this Florida heat had them running for the house pretty quickly. Round 2 was later that evenining and went over much better with balls of curly floof. As we are hoping to make all experiences positive ones the next week or so we will stick to early and late times for our extended outdoor play and quick potty breaks during the sweltering times of day. We will probably introduce some water play early on too helping minimize the heat intolerance while adding a level of socialization to their resume. This is when things really start to get fun!
3 Weeks and Figuring out Food
Messy Messy Messy but oh so much fun to watch them slurp and swim in the mushy gruel. They took to solids surprisingly well and cleaned their bowls clean! It's always a nervous time waiting to see how their tummies will handle things but so far everything is going great and they are producing the most perfect little tootsie rolls! Even after our first round of deworming last week we maintained perfect poopies daily! Couldn't ask for a better litter, they continue to surprise us and we learn just as much from them as they learn from us!
At 3 Weeks We Wee Wee on the Wee Grass!
They are taking to the grass potty tray so well! It is amazing the progress you can make when you introduce the right things at the right time in the right way! We do not intend to use it long as outside potty time is the goal but this is a great soft introduction for potty having a different place than playing and sleeping.
Happy 4th of July From These Furry Floofs!
Back from our camping adventures just in time to celebrate the 4th of July! Only a dog breeder would get truly excited about the prospect of fireworks in relation to puppies. We love every opportunity for organic exposure to things that some dogs have a difficult time with. We are rocking the next few days with lots of positive interaction, stress free, fun filled times with open windows to let in all the boom boom sounds! If they get introduced to this stuff when they are at this crucial developmental stage and all of their associations with the noise are positive ones of happy voices, interesting smells, and loving pets then they should have no reason to associate it negatively or with anxiety later on!
2 Weeks and Ready for Adventure!
Our eyes are starting to open, and we are off on our first big adventure...Camper rides, Camping, and meeting new friends! Of course we make sure to control their environment strictly as well as those who interact with them, but with their eyes starting to open it's the perfect time for them to learn that there are more people in the world than the handful that have been with them up until now! New smells, New sounds, New sights all in a positive safe way! Momma is also super super excited to be able to get back to some of her non maternal loves in life! Dandy absolutely loves to go camping with the family and seeing her venture away from the pups a bit brought me a lot of happiness this week. It is important that her life consist of far more things than raising pups, she deserves every sniff, swim, and stroll this weekend!
